A grueling, physical week ended with the Shakopee wrestling team finishing fifth at the Richfield Duals.
The Sabers wrestled seven dual meets in five days and came away with a 4-3 record.
“We had a grueling week,” head coach Mark Neu said. “Tuesday, Friday, Saturday is always tough because of the travel and making weight three times. It takes a lot out of the kids.”
To end the week, Shakopee wrestled in the Richfield Duals on Saturday and won its final two matches after losing a tough match to Eagan.
The Shakopee girls basketball team is riding a five-game win streak going into the Christmas break.
Shakopee destroyed South St. Paul 50-11 on Dec. 16 and then defeated Hastings 36-29 on Friday to stretch the winning streak to five games.
The Sabers now have two weeks off before they face Jordan on Saturday, Jan. 3.
“I think we are taking some baby steps,” head coach Juan Mitchell said. “The girls are learning how to win.”
The Hastings game wasn’t a thing of beauty but the Sabers made enough plays down the stretch to get the victory.
The Shakopee girls hockey team scored five goals in 10 minutes to defeat New Ulm 8-4 at the Shakopee Ice Arena on Friday.
The goal barrage came after New Ulm tied the game at 3-3 just two minutes into the third period.
After that the Sabers scored five times to blow the game wide open.
First it was junior Julie Menke scoring an unassisted goal at 4:22 of the third period to give Shakopee a 4-3 lead.
That was followed by Lauren Hespenheide’s goal at 7:40 for a 5-3 lead. Amy Menke and Randi Weinzierl assisted on the goal.
The victory over Bloomington Kennedy came about nine months too late for the Shakopee boys basketball team but the Sabers will take it.
The Sabers exacted some revenge on Thursday at home as they dumped the Eagles 83-63.
Kennedy was the team that kept Shakopee out of the 2008 state tournament as the Eagles defeated the Sabers in the Section 2-4A championship last March.
Even though both teams are completely different, and Kennedy has five new starters and a new coach, defeating the team that ended your previous season is always sweet.
