Minnesota State University senior linebacker Blake Freese (Eden Prairie, Minn.) has been selected to play in the 2009 Cactus Bowl. Freese, who played in the East Coast All-Star Game last month, was a First-Team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division selection this past year for Minnesota State and was a Second-Team All-North Central Conference selection in 2007. Freese becomes the second linebacker in school history – and the first since Stephen Henley in 1994 – to earn a trip to the game.
Chaska High School graduate Tim Mattran spent this summer working to make the Minnesota Vikings roster.
Though Mattran ultimately did not make the team this time around, his NFL dreams are still squarely in sight.
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Mattran to their practice squad the day before Thanksgiving.
Mattran was not selected in the NFL draft after completing his fifth-year senior season as a center on the Stanford University offensive line.
The Vikings brought Mattran to training camp in August and he got in a lot of work at left tackle.
When he started to place kick for the Jordan football team as a junior Lee Gonzales struggled.
Just a year – and many hours of practice – later, Gonzales was named the Minnesota River Conference Special Teams Player of the Year for the 2008 season. He was also named to the Star Tribune’s third team All-Metro team and honorable mention to the Minnesota River Conference.
Two weeks ago, the Eden Prairie High School girls swim and dive team put an exclamation point to the Eden Prairie High School falls sports season by placing third at the state meet.
From a team standpoint, the fall sports season was a resounding success. Including the state champion Eden Prairie High School girls cross-country team, four Eden Prairie teams advanced to state tournaments. Two teams, boys cross-country and girls soccer, finished second. The swim team finished third and the football team was one play away from advancing to the state semifinals.
Several players in the Southwest Scoreboard coverage area were named to the 2008 Minnesota Associated Press All-State prep football team.
The squads were voted on by a statewide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.
Local players are in bold.

COLIN KING HOLY FAMILY SENIOR TE/DE
Senior captain Colin King is a solid two way starter and an obvious leader of the Holy Family Fire. Offensively, he had 45 rushes for 280 yards. He also had 19 catches for 346 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned two kicks for touchdowns. As a defensive end he accumulated 13 solo tackles and 12 assists. Colin worked hard in the off season strength and conditioning program. His hard work shows because he does not come off the field for offense, defense or special teams. Colin is the son of Lori and Kevin King.
