Turkey hunters have until Jan. 9 to apply for the 2009 spring hunt, wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

"The spring turkey application deadline tends to sneak up on hunters, so we extended the process this year," said Bill Penning, DNR farmland wildlife program leader. "Although we've allowed additional time, we encourage hunters to apply early and avoid the last-minute rush."

Now through early January, hunters will head out into the fields, duck blinds and boats with their “best friend” beside them.

Joe Dolejsi, an Eden Prairie resident who is the past president of North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, spends time throughout the year training hunters and their companions to make sure they return from the fields in good shape as well.

While dogs bred for hunting relish this time of year, there are some important things to remember about keeping dogs in good shape in the fall, Dolejsi said.
